Last winter, CEO Joseph Heitzler stepped onto the bridge of the good ship CART largely on the strength of his television credentials. Heitzler had spent much of his career in the TV business. CART's directors noted that, with a new television contract being one of the new CEO's first orders of business, Heitzler was particularly well suited for the job.

In the week before the race at Road America, details of CART's new television package leaked, and three days before the race the plan for 2002 and beyond was confirmed. After months of anticipation the deal that could ultimately define the Heitzler Era in CART was on the table for all to see.
