Menard fires Ray
Team Menard fired driver Greg Ray, replacing him with promising newcomer Jaques Lazier. Ray won five races, 13 poles and the 1999 Indy Racing League title for Menard. At his firing Ray was 13th in points with only one top-10 finish this season (a win at Atlanta) and an average finish of 15. At press time, Ray had not spoken to the media about his future plans. But he has excelled at cultivating sponsors in recent months, adding Dallas-based EDS to his program, for example. Lazier, the 30-year-old younger brother of Buddy Lazier, has shown well for a variety of small IRL teams since joining the league last year. After replacing the injured Davey Hamilton at Sam Schmidt Motorsports in June, he won the pole for the Richmond race and finished third in Nashville.
Herbert tests IRL car
Johnny Herbert tested an Indy Racing League car for Heritage Motorsports at the Kentucky Speedway, topping 200 mph on the 1.5-mile oval after just three laps. He spent almost three hours in the cockpit of the G Force-Infiniti. Herbert wants an IRL ride in 2002. ``This is a step in the right direction,'' he said. ``My goal is winning the Indy 500 and after the tests I feel confident that this is within my reach.''
