Greater Washington is a bright spot nationally for minority business owners.
The U.S. Census Bureau recently reported that Maryland and Virginia are among the top 10 U.S. states with the largest number of minority-owned firms. Maryland has 82,619, while Virginia has 71,700.
D.C. and Maryland also rank among the top 10 with the largest percentage of minority-owned firms: 33.6 and 20.6, respectively. The report (www.census.gov) uses data from 1997, the most recent year for which figures are available.
Prince George's County alone accounts for more than a quarter of Maryland's minority businesses, with 25,119, the report says. That also represents half …
