Speed: Your physics teacher will tell you it's the ratio of distance traveled over time, or something like that. Having lots of it is fun, but sometimes the sensation is enough.
Audi S4
Price: $41,325
Engine: 2.7-liter V6, 250 hp, 258 lb-ft
Curb weight: 3593 lbs
Drivetrain: awd, six-speed manual
You've seen the pictures: a man strapped into an accelerator sled, face rippling from air slamming into it. You can imagine the gs smooshing his eyeballs against his brain and the strain of his neck muscles as they struggle to keep his head upright. Now picture that guy behind the wheel of an Audi S4, and you'll get a glimpse into the sheer force with which this car propels its occupants. Call it Teutonic rocket-power in a stylish package, a virtual V-2 on wheels (except it doesn't blow up). The key to the S4's acceleration lies in a broad torque band. Its 258 lb-ft peaks at 1850 rpm and holds that peak through 3600 rpm, with little turbo lag. Audi says that's good for a 5.9-second 0-to-60-mph time; we managed it in 5.62.
