by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - A preparation of killed Mycobacterium vaccae either alone or with bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG), offers 80% protection against leprosy development in children exposed to the disease, researchers in England have found.

After eight years, children who were vaccinated with either BCG alone, BCG plus 10(7) killed M. vaccae, or 10(8) killed M. vaccae alone were equally well protected from leprosy and were better protected than unvaccinated children, said L.V. Truoc and colleagues at Royal Free and University College Medical School, London.

In the year before vaccination, 14/446 (3.1%) of the children, who lived in close contact with leprosy patients, had developed leprosy, and among those who remained unvaccinated, 9/74 (12.2%) developed the disease in the first four years of the study and 5/65 (7.7%) developed the disease in the second four years, reported Truoc and coworkers.

Vaccinated children fared better; they developed leprosy at a rate of 20/343 (5.8%) in the first four years and 5/323 (1.5%) in the second four years, the researchers said ("Vaccination against leprosy at Ben San Leprosy Centre, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam," Vaccine, 2001;19(25-26):3451-3458).

The vaccines therefore conferred 52.5% protection in the first four years and 80.5% in the second four ...
