2001 JUL 26 - (NewsRx Network) -- by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - Women who are morbidly obese have a significantly greater risk of pregnancy complications such as gestational diabetes and hypertension, say researchers working in the United Arab Emirates.
A.S. Kumari and colleagues found that obesity is an independent risk factor for adverse perinatal outcomes.
They studied 188 women presenting to Al-Mafraq Hospital in Abu Dhabi who were morbidly obese during their first trimester (body mass index (BMI) [greater than]40 kg/[m.sup.2]) and ag- and parity-matched controls with normal BMIs.
A significantly greater proportion of the morbidly obese women had adverse perinatal outcomes such as hypertension (28.8% vs. 2.9%), gestational diabetes (24.5% vs. 2.2%), cesarean section (15.2% vs. 9.3%), and macrosomia (32.6% vs. 9.3%) than the nonobese subjects.
Even after Kumari and coworkers excluded morbidly obese women with diabetes and hypertension antedating the index pregnancy and gestational diabetes and/or pregnancy-induced hypertension during the index pregnancy, they still found significant differences in perinatal outcomes.
