2001 JUL 26- (NewsRx Network) -- by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Female patients with ovarian carcinoma or ovarian endometriomata produce more angiogenic factors than patients with other ovarian diseases do.
Both interleukin (IL)-8 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) promote angiogenesis mechanisms within the body. Doctors at the University of Canada in Toronto say females with certain types of ovarian diseases produce more of these factors.
Their research looked at 100 women with different forms of ovarian diseases that included ovarian carcinoma, ovarian endometriomata, ovarian cysts, and follicular ovarian cysts. Investigators measured these women's sera and cystic fluid VEGF and IL-8 levels before and at the time of surgical therapy.
"Levels of both VEGF and IL-8 were found to be significantly higher in the cystic fluid of ovarian carcinomas and endometriomata than in serous and follicular cysts," reported A. Fasciani and coworkers in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Furthermore, in fluid sampled from endometriomatas, VEGF and IL-8 levels correlated with each other.
