The distinction between 'Front-Loading' and 'Top Loading' clothes washers is no longer needed for the purposes of the FTC's Appliance Labeling Rule, the Commission explained, amending Appendix F of the Rule to eliminate that distinction.

The Rule requires manufacturers to disclose household appliance energy information to help consumers compare respective energy efficiencies of competing models.

The subcategories 'top' and 'front' loading were added to the categories 'standard' and 'compact' in 1994 following comprehensive review of the Rule and public comments suggesting that horizontal axis clothes washers (generally front loading) were significantly more …
