2001 JUL 12 - (NewsRx Network) -- For years women have been exhorted by medical professionals and interest groups to check themselves for lumps in the breast. Now the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care is questioning that advice.

Many studies have examined the effectiveness of various screening tools for breast cancer, which accounts for 30% of diagnosed cancer in Canadian women. In 1994, the Canadian Task Force on the Periodic Health Examination (now the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care) concluded there was insufficient evidence to recommend for or against screening using breast self-examination (BSE).
