2001 JUL 12 - (NewsRx Network) -- Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte have discovered that bacteria may be able to survive antibiotic treatment for bladder infections by reverting to an inactive state.

In simple terms, some bacteria seem capable of hiding in urine.

Hadley J. Hartwell, a master's student in biology, and Todd R. Steck, a microbiologist and associate professor of biology at UNC Charlotte, presented the findings of their research at the recent 101st meeting of the American Society for Microbiology.

Hartwell explained that urinary tract, or bladder, infections caused by Escherichia coli, a common bacterium, appear to return in as many as 30% of women thought to be cured by antibiotics. Until now, such recurrences were often a mystery.
