by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Access to the Internet has made information gathering easier, even for public health officials. Using an Internet survey, investigators at the University of Alabama have studied practices relating to hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination and sexual behaviors in a large group of bisexual and homosexual men.
Three hundred thirty-six bisexual or homosexual men with an average age of 38 years participated in the online survey developed by S.D. Rhodes and colleagues at the University of Alabama School of Public Health in Birmingham.
"Nearly 42% (142) reported at least one dose of [HBV] vaccine; the remainder were completely unvaccinated," Rhodes and coworkers said. In addition, approximately 20% of survey participants reported being unknowledgeable about hepatitis.
Major correlates for receiving the vaccine included being of younger age, having greater knowledge about the vaccine, communicating with a health care provider about viral hepatitis, or having received professional training that included information about hepatitis ("Correlates of hepatitis B vaccination in a high-risk population: An Internet sample," American Journal of Medicine, 2001;110(8):628-632).
