WASHINGTON-The Senate panel led by S.C. Democrat Fritz Hollings on Thursday rejected President Bush's pick to head the Consumer Product Safety Commission, handing Bush his first nomination defeat since taking office. Mary Sheila Gall, a 10-year member of the agency charged with protecting the public against "the unreasonable risk of injuries and death associated with consumer products," was turned down on a 12-11 party-line vote in the Senate Commerce Committee.
