--Dear Mr. Buckley: You are right that "begging the question" (Notes & Asides, June 11) involves a failure to answer it, but the full meaning is more specific. A begged question remains unanswered because in some fashion the answer is assumed in the way the question is posed or addressed.

Dear Mr. Buckley: Tsk, tsk. I was very surprised that neither you nor your correspondent could come up with a definition of "begging the question." It refers to a rather common fallacy in reasoning, in which the reasoner uses unproven assumptions about the question itself in order to answer the question. Example goes as follows:

Question: Is Jesus God?

Answer: Yes, because the Bible says so, and we know that the Bible is true because Jesus, who is God, says that it is true.
