Disturbing facts about drug marketing
Remember how, Volume 2, Number 2 of The Doctor's People, tried to estimate the cost of Upjohn's massive advertising campaign for its hairgrowth drug, Rogaine (minoxidil)? Well, we now know exactly how many dollars were spent. According to the April 1989 issue of Money Magazine, the exact cost of that campaign was $30 million. Despite the company's publicity efforts in the mass media, Rogaine's sales have failed to grow from their 1986 high figure of $33 million. Money says one of the reasons for the drab sales is that "Rogaine works best for a minority of younger men with thinning hair and does only a little for receding hairlines."…
