2001 JUL 5 - (NewsRx Network)-- The use of statin drugs is associated with a 22% reduction in the risk of deep vein thrombosis for people 65 years or older, according to an article in the June 11, 2001, issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.
Joel G. Ray. MD. FRCPC. MSc. from the University of Toronto. Canada. and colleagues retrospectively studied eight years of data from two cohorts (a primary cohort consisting of 125,862 men and women and a secondary cohort consisting of 89.508 women) of Ontario residents aged 65 or older. The researchers evaluated the subsequent risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) among men and women prescribed statin drugs: thyroid replacement therapy, as a control group; nonstatin lipid-lowering agents. as a biological comparison: or estrogen in the women-only cohort as a comparison group.
In the primary cohort, the researchers found that statin users (n=77.993) had an associated 22% decreased risk of DVT relative to those prescribed thyroid replacement therapy (n=35,978).
