Approximately 16 million Americans have diabetes, a set of diseases characterized by high blood glucose levels resulting from defects in the body's ability to produce and/or use insulin. Some 20 to 30 million more have impaired glucose tolerance, a potentially pre-diabetic condition. Diabetes can lead to severely debilitating or fatal complications, including blindness, kidney disease, and a two to four times greater risk of heart disease and stroke. Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death by disease in the U.S., and incidence of the disease is increasing alarmingly, both in the U.S. and Europe.
The recent scientific sessions of the American Diabetes Association showcased some new drugs and some new ways to deliver old ones.
Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp.
