2001 JUN 28 - (NewsRx Network) -- by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Docetaxel can be combined with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) to provide effective and generally nontoxic stem cell mobilization for breast and ovarian cancer patients about to undergo high-dose chemotherapy, researchers in Pennsylvania report.
The drug is already "known to have significant antineoplastic activity" against these two forms of malignancy, G.G. Laport and colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania explained in the journal Bone Marrow Transplantation.
Laport and coworkers found that a single dose of docetaxel followed by daily administration of G-CSF quickly enables high peripheral blood progenitor cell (PBPC) yields with little adverse effect.
Almost all patients (97%) studied were able to commence leukapheresis within nine days of docetaxel administration, they said. Stem cell harvests of 2 x [10.sup.6] cells/kg or more were possible in 82% of patients within three or fewer days.
Neutropenia was limited in the patients studied, with no neutropenic fever observed and white blood cell counts remaining above 1.0 X [10.sup.9]/1 in more than ...
