2001 JUN 28 - (NewsRx Network) -- by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Amniotic fluid leakage into the bloodstream may provoke dangerous coagulation in pregnant women, researchers in Poland warn.
"Tissue factor (TF) is known to be present in a high concentration in amniotic fluid," explained M. Uszynski and colleagues at Ludwik Rydygier Medical University. TF promotes blood clotting, and its activity is normally offset by that of tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI).
However, Uszynski and coworkers found that amniotic TEPI may not be able to prevent the procoagulatory effects of TF when amniotic fluid finds its way into the maternal bloodstream.
The researchers were able to show for the first time that TFPI is actually present in amniotic fluid. The concentration of TFPI there is roughly 40% of the normal levels of TFPI found in blood plasma, they said.
These low levels are TFPI are not nearly enough to control the extremely high levels of TF found in amniotic fluid, however. TF concentrations there were almost 45 times greater than normal plasma levels, study data showed. Because of this discrepancy, the researchers noted, amniotic fluid leakage into the maternal bloodstream upsets the delicate balance of TF and TEPI and can ...
