Call to shut bases puts lawmakers on alert.

New Mexico's congressional delegates and the Department of Defense could resume a political battle involving Kirtland Air Force Base after Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld renewed the call for more base closing.

"I don't think the Defense Department has shown us that they saved money last time," said Rep. Heather Wilson, an Albuquerque Republican. "They have a lot of work to do."

Wilson, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said she would not support forming a base closure commission, which would be the next step in the process.
