The temperature had just dipped below 100 degrees a nippy 99 when Mike McEntee again laced up his tennis shoes and prepared to redden his knuckles, knocking on door after door.

City Hall work usually means wearing a suit and tie, but mayoral hopeful McEntee, a current city councilor, has donned a T-shirt and shorts. Late Sunday afternoon, McEntee trekked through a West Side neighborhood, looking for residents to pen their name to his petition.

To get on the ballot for the Oct. 2 election, mayoral candidates must file a petition containing signatures of at least 2 percent of registered voters 5,096 signatures by Friday. …
