Of good-byes, good nights and good ol' boys: There's little that's bad about connecting a road with a vehicle and just driving.

Oldsmobile AURORA

Price: $36,170

Engine: 4.0-liter V8, 250 hp, 260 lb-ft

Curb weight: 3803 lbs

Drivetrain: fwd, four-speed automatic

``Good-bye, proud world!'' wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson, but the same words could easily have spilled from the lips of Ransom Eli Olds had he lived to see the death of his namesake company. What are we losing with the death of Oldsmobile? Sure, the Curved Dash Olds was all the rage-100 years ago, when Olds led all American automakers in production. More recently, however, Oldsmobile's mission was to take on the imports with cars like the Aurora, a firm yet smooth-riding, elegant midsizer. Its 4.0-liter has plenty of power to propel the Aurora's almost two-ton mass, while its four-speed shifts efficiently. Inside, the Aurora feels clean and uncluttered-right on target. But all's for naught. Olds 0, imports 1.
