Expect a pitched battle for the top of the heap between Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Volkswagen once VW rolls out its luxury flagship D1 next year.

D1 is VW's first attempt to take on the Mercedes E-Class and BMW 7 Series in the luxury sedan market. The D1 reportedly will be offered with three engine choices-the W8, W10 or W12. Prices for the top D1 could reach into the $70,000 range-unheard of territory for a company whose name, roughly translated, means ``The People's Car.''
