"Both of my older sisters have been married and divorced, so my fiance had a hard time convincing my parents that he was in our relationship for the long haul. He had spent time with my family on many occasions, but they just wouldn't warm up to him. When my nephew's birthday party was approaching, I suggested that my boyfriend skip the festivities to avoid any awkwardness, but he was determined to win over my parents. All day, he was crawling around on the floor with the kids, smearing cake on his face, and even making balloon animals. When my mother took me aside, I was sure she would comment on his immaturity, but instead she told me that a man who loved kids that much understood the importance of family, and she finally felt ready to welcome him into ours."
