2001 JUL 25 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) --
by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - Influenza vaccine coverage is not what it should be among staff at long-term care facilities in Alberta, Canada, and such facilities should take measures to make staff vaccination convenient, says a researcher working there.
M.L. Russell surveyed all of Alberta's long-term care facilities to find out how many were in compliance with recommendations from Canada's National Advisory Committee on Immunization that all staff and residents should be routinely vaccinated against flu.
Of 160 facilities receiving the anonymous mail survey and two reminders, 136 responded, 85 of which provided data on staff vaccine coverage, and 118 of which offered data on resident vaccination rates.
Only a median of 29.9% of staff in these facilities were vaccinated, compared with 91% of residents, reported Russell. Staff vaccination was required in only two facilities, and only one mandated it in a written policy.
Other measures that might have been helpful in encouraging staff vaccine coverage, as reported for the facilities most likely to have higher vaccination rates among staff, included:
* using a traveling vaccination cart
