2001 JUN 21 - (NewsRx Network) -- A study in the June 2001 issue of the American Journal of Public Health suggests lesbian women undergo routine Pap tests less frequently and at older ages than non-homosexual women.
The major cause of cervical cancer, human papillomavirus (HPV), can be sexually transmitted between women who have sex with women (WSW).
Of 248 WSW, 31(13%) in this study tested positive for HPV, and 11(4%) had pre-cancerous changes on Pap test. Most of these abnormalities occurred in WSW who reported no prior sex with men, or sex with men more than a year previously ("Pap test screening and prevalence of genital human papillomavirus infection among women who have sex with women," Am J Public Health, June 2001).
