The coastal plain of the [Arctic National Wildlife Refuge]--the part coveted by [oil] developers--is the only segment of Alaska's 1,100-mile north coast still fully protected. It is the essential calving ground of North America's largest herd of migratory caribou, on which the natives are partly dependent for subsistence living. It is the untouched and extremely sensitive habitat for vast quantities of bird and animal life. It forms an integral part of a unique Arctic ecosystem of indescribable beauty and of unquestioned scientific value.
