With its truck sales in decline, Nissan isn't waiting for all-new models, but giving its existing trucks a good, swift kick in the bumper.
First, the supercharged Xterra (below) announced at the Chicago auto show arrives in showrooms in August. Shared with the Frontier truck, the Roots-type Eaton blower boosts horsepower in the 3.3-liter V6 by 25 percent, from 170 to 210. Torque goes up from 200 lb-ft to 246 on automatic-transmission Xterras and to 231 lb-ft on those with five-speed manuals. The supercharger sits under a new ``power bulge'' hood. All 2002 Xterras get a new front fascia and headlights, as well as a redesigned instrument panel inside.
We drove one all across California recently, up mountain passes and over long stretches of desert, and found the supercharger mighty helpful in passing. The distinctive supercharger whine at full throttle was a nice touch, too. Sounded like a hot rod.
