These subliminal first-impression tricks work so well, even your boyfriend's mom will get sucked in.
* Scary but true: Mere minutes after you first walk up to that cute bartender, he's already decided whether he's interested in scoring your number... or would rather you take your glass of vino elsewhere. "We male snap judgments about people all the time," says Nicholas Boothman, author of How to Make People Like You in 90 Seconds or Less. "How often have you heard someone say, 'I knew right away she was perfect for the job'?"
Experts disagree on how long that wow-them window of opportunity stays open--the range runs from seconds to a whopping four minutes (an opening conversation has to count for something). Regardless, time is not on your side. But knowledge is. How do you work everything from tone of voice to body language to dazzle anyone instantly--from a hot stud to a cold-as-ice job interviewer? Read on for the scoop.

The first key to making a stunning debut: location, location, location. That means literally getting on people's good side. Body placement is the one of the simplest--and stealthiest--ways to send out powerful subconscious signals that say everything from Accept me--I'm one of you to I'm somebody you should really get to know. Peg*, 26, still remembers the first time she quivered into her company holiday party. "I didn't know a soul," she says. "But as soon as I scanned the room, I realized that all of the movers and shakers were standing in the center, so I headed straight there. Within five minutes, my boss was introducing me to her husband."
For those crucial sell-yourself-to-a-crowd situations, Leil Lowndes, author of How to Be a People Magnet, spills this suggestion: Rather than lingering in the doorway, shoot a smile and a warm wave to a far empty corner of the room. "Then slowly make your way through the crowd," says Lowndes, "saying 'Hi, good to see you' to every third person you pass. People will assume that you know everyone there, and any strangers you greet will think that you've just mistaken them for someone else." By then, you'll have the whole crowd wondering how you know so many people--and how they can get to know you.
