CN tells STB it could agree -- reluctantly -- 'not to compete' as condition to WC merger

The Canadian National Railway-Wisconsin Central merger seems destined for approval by the Surface Transportation Board, given the absence of strong opposition and the relatively small number of responses received by the board. But the concerns of one protestor, Great lakes Transportation LLC, are compelling enough for CN to consider agreeing to condition the merger on a noncompete clause with GLT.

Through its rail and barge subsidiaries, GLT transports taconite shipments between iron ore mines in Minnesota and steel mills in Pennsylvania. Its fear is that a combined CN-WC …
