KUALA LUMPUR, Mon. - All open burning must cease immediately, Science, Technology and Environment Minister Datuk Law Hieng Ding said today.

The order will remain in force until Sept 30.

"From today until Sept 30, all forms of open burning are strictly prohibited," he said.

It is understood the order was issued following the appearance of haze in the Klang Valley due to open burning in Sumatra.

Under the law, open burning must cease if the Air Pollutant Index breaches 100.

Law said those who continued to conduct open burning could be fined up to RM2,000 under the Environmental Quality (Prescribed Activities) (Open Burning) Order. …
