For 12 years AutoWeek editors have polled subscribers to determine the changing direction of trends among America's most passionate car buyers, a survey at the heart of the AutoWeek America's Best issue. We mail surveys to a sample base of 1 percent of our entire subscriber list and this year that number totaled 3400. The questionnaires, which have no incentive attached, are created and counted in our offices, a process that begins in early March and concludes with the publishing of this issue.

Over the years a single, major question has remained constant: What is the American car about which you are most proud? Hence the publication date nearest July 4. When we started this, American cars were held in fairly low regard-readers couldn't even come up with 10 clear winners. Things are different now in that respect, so we're ready to move on from a flag-waving feature to a story that better represents the tastes and trends of America's car-buyers.
