2001 JUL 11 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) --
by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - Children younger than five who are vaccinated with the Rubini strain are at significantly greater risk of suffering illness during mumps outbreaks than those vaccinated with the Jeryl-Lynn strain, researchers in Spain have found.
Martin R. de Los Rios and epidemiologists in Madrid studied vaccination status of residents and students, along with methods used to diagnose mumps, between January 1999 and June 2000 in this case-control study.
The incidence in the first 27 weeks of the year 2000 for the one- to four-year-old age group was 334.7/105,000, the researchers noted. They found that the risk of catching the disease depended on the strain of vaccine used, particularly in the under-five age group, who were at significantly greater risk if they were vaccinated with the Rubini strain, compared with the Jeryl-Lynn strain (odds ratio 6.28).
Diagnosis by serological determination of immunoglobulin M confirmed only 22.2% of cases, reported de Los Rios and coworkers ("Mumps in an urban area of the Community of Madrid: Vaccination status, diagnosis and intervention measures," Atencion Primaria, June 15, 2001;28(1):10-16).
