All U.S. employees will be forced to take furlough in early July

Houston-based, compaq Computer Corp. will shut down all U.S. operations during the first week in July in order to cut operating expenses.

Compaq is forcing 33,000 full-time employees in the United States to take four days of vacation that week, in conjunction with the July 4 company holiday.

Steve Sievert, senior manager in corporate communications for Compaq, says if employees do not have enough vacation days or floating holidays available to take, they will be required to take the time off without pay.

"This runs the gamut -- from senior management all the way down to our secretarial staff," Sievert says. "Unless they have specific clearance from their senior level manager ... they will be off. We anticipate that the vast majority of …
