Sometimes a statesman's minor actions are more disturbing than his grandest gestures. British prime minister Tony Blair's recent emasculation of the House of Lords did little to advance his New Labour cause; and yet the ease with which Blair staged his little exercise in Downing Street hooliganism rankled all the same. The bully-boy impunity with which he kicked sand in the faces of so many fuddy-duddy descendants of Norman knights rankled more, indeed, than some of Labour's most ambitious projects (such as European unity).
