KAMO, Kyoto -- An elementary school principal here has apologized for pretending to stab eight students at a morning assembly, school officials said Thursday.

"I was trying to make students understand the seriousness of the (Ikeda, Osaka Prefecture, stabbing) incident, but I acted inappropriately," the unnamed 53-year-old Kuni Elementary School principal said. "I am sorry." Parents complained that the principal went too far on June 11, when he summoned eight pupils, the same number as those killed in the fatal June 8 stabbing in Ikeda, Osaka, and mimicked plunging a knife into them.
