KOMAKI, Aichi -- Hundreds of fragments of a Japan Airlines (JAL) jet engine plummeted onto a densely populated area of the city, damaging at least three parked cars on Wednesday, police said.

A shop assistant suffered slight burns on his fingers after he picked up what appeared to be a fragment of the JAL DC-10's turbine at around 11:05 a.m. in the Sotobori district of Komaki. Two passenger vehicles in a parking lot in the Obariiruka Shinden district were also partially damaged by the falling fragments, but no one was seriously injured.
