2001 JUL 4 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) --
by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - Mice immunized with Porphyromonas gingivalis in alum adjuvant have higher antibody response to P. gingivalis infection than unimmunized mice, say researchers working in Israel.
"The present study was designed to examine the effect of immunization on the local cellular, cytokine and antibody response to P. gingivalis in mice," reported Y. Houri-Haddad and colleagues at Hebrew University.
They tested the potential of a P. gingivalis vaccine to control periodontitis in three groups of mice: one immunized with P. gingivalis plus incomplete Freund's adjuvant (IFA), one immunized with P. gingivalis plus alum, and one unimmunized to serve as controls.
Researchers challenged mice with infection through previously implanted subcutaneous chambers at baseline (day 0) then tested chamber exudate for the presence of leukocytes and the cytokines tumor necrosis factor (TNF-)alpha, interferon (IFN)gamma (pro-inflammatory) and interleukin (IL)-10 (anti-inflammatory) on days 0, 1, and 7 post-immunization, said Houri-Haddad and coworkers. The researchers also measured immunoglobulin G (IgG) in both exudates and sera.
Their findings were as follows:
* Leukocyte counts increased over the study period and were greater in the immunized mice
