More Women Than Previously Assumed Need Leave During Pregnancy.
2001 JUN 14 - (NewsRx Network) -- Despite the common perception that pregnant career women stay on the job until they go into labor, a study in the June 2001 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology reports that a sizable minority of pregnant women in the U.S. may require prenatal medical leave.
A survey of 1,635 Georgia women who were employed during pregnancy found that nearly 30 percent were advised by a physician or nurse to stop work during pregnancy. Half of the women who stopped working did so by the seventh month of pregnancy or earlier. Medically prescribed leaves were associated with clinical risk factors and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
