2001 JUN 14 - (NewsRx Network) -- by Julie Henderson, senior editor - 'Women rule the Internet," proclaimed Holly Atkinson, MD, president or iVillageHealth.com, in her introductory remarks during the eHealthcare World Women's Leadership Forum session, held May 23, 2001, and titled "Women in eSpace/Women in eHealthcare."
With 51% of online users being female, "women are expected to drive Internet growth," she added.
What do women like about using the Internet? It helps them balance work and family, Atkinson said, and improves time efficiency.
Simply by sheer numbers, and adding their role as primary caregiver and "family health gatekeeper," savvy marketers of health products online will need to address this important target group and their eHealth wants carefully.
And the numbers tell the story:
Of women who use the Web, 52% are seeking health information, reported Jim Callandrillo, senior vice-president with Market Measures Interactive, and panelist at this session, who noted that the number of women using the Internet surpassed that of men for the first time in 2000.
And of people looking up health information on the Web, 63% are women, according to Carla Wojnaroski, PA, director, Health & Parenting, America OnLine. "Women are truly embracing the Internet," she said. Most (93%) are seeking information on physical illness (a disease or condition); 28% are looking up mental illness resources, she reported. The physician is still the No.1 source of health information for women, but the Internet runs No. 2.
