Phase I Vaccine Trial Set To Begin In Women With HIV And/Or Human Papillomavirus.(Multikine trials for cervical cancer vaccine)
2001 JUN 7 - (NewsRx Network) -- The Institute of Human Virology (IHV), at the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute, is set to begin Phase I clinical trials on Multikine, a drug produced in Baltimore, Maryland, by Cel-Sci Corporation, to treat patients with cervical cancer.
Edmund Tramont, MD, associate director of the IHV and professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and Cel-Sci were awarded a Maryland Industrial Partnership (MIPS) award in 2000 to help fund the trials.
"This is scientifically exciting because greater than 95% of cervical cancers are caused by a human papillomavirus (HPV)," said Tramont, the lead investigator in the study. "This is the first clinical trial with Multikine in patients with cervical cancer and we will concentrate on women infected with HPV and HIV. Many women with HIV also are dually infected with HPV."
The goal of the Phase I trial is to obtain the safety and preliminary efficacy data on Multikine as a treatment for these deadly diseases.
