Outspoken Foreign Minister Makiko Tanaka was rebuked by top government spokesman Yasuo Fukuda on Friday for overstepping her powers and trying to influence the way a Diet committee was being run.

On Thursday, Tanaka phoned Ryuichi Doi, the chairman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, and demanded him to cut the speaking time given to committee member and her political adversary Muneo Suzuki of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

"Can't you do something about this pest?" Tanaka reportedly asked Doi. Doi reminded Tanaka that the legislature's independence from the government is guaranteed under the Constitution during Friday's committee …
