Our May 21 article on Tony Blair's war with the British media evoked mostly condemnation of what one reader called "Fleet Street's gutter press." The influence of corporate media barons especially came under fire. "North American business interests frustrate all attempts at a rational debate on the future of Britain in Europe," a reader complained, while another contended that some media barons would "nominate the future prime ministers of Europe if they had their way." One took issue with our assertion that the British press is driven by conservative ideologues: "Six newspapers support the Labour Party. What 'right wing' press?"
