ICMC 2001 to be Held in Havana, Cuba
Since its launch in 1974, the annual International Computer Music Conference (ICMC) has developed into the principal international forum for the exchange of artistic, scientific, engineering, and philosophical research in the field of computer music and music technology. The ICMC has been presented annually in many of the major cultural capitals of the industrialized world and has been hosted in Europe, North America, and Asia. In 2001, the conference will for the first time be hosted by a Latin American country.
ICMC 2001 will be held in Havana, Cuba from 17-22 September. The conference organizers will have extensive use of concert facilities in Havana, including the elegant Teatro Amadeo Roldan--recently extensively renovated, the Casa de las Americas, the Karl Marx Theatre, and several other major venues in the area. Other sessions will be held in the Hotel Melia Cohiba, which has extensive facilities for conference activities.
The Hotel Melia Cohiba and the Teatro Roldan are both located in the Vedadodistrict, one of the historic central areas of Havana, which is Cuba's business and cultural center. ICMC 2001 has extensive support from the Cuban Government, the Ministry of Culture, the Cuban Institute of Music, and the Laboratorio Nacional de Musica Electroacustica in Havana.
Cuba has been an active member of the international electroacoustic music community since the early 1960s. Composer Juan Blanco, director of the Laboratorio Nacional de Musica Electroacustica, has been particularly active in this field, hosting smaller conferences in Cuba since 1981. Juan Blanco is the Director of the festival "Spring in Havana" and the Honorary Director of ICMC 2001.
The ICMC 2001 organizing committee comprises Juan Blanco, Honorary Director (Cuba); Enmanuel Blanco, Executive Director (Cuba); Aleida Diaz, Director of International Events (Cuba); Zenaida Gonzalez, Administration (Cuba); Marco Trevisani, International Coordinator (Italy); and Andrew Schloss, International Coordinator (Canada and USA).
