According to a June 5, 2001, statement by the Uganda AIDS Commission (UAC), an HIV vaccine may be available to Ugandans in five to seven years.
The Monitor newspaper reported that "UAC's director for Research and Policy Development, Prof. John Rwomushana, said the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) would announce results from the first phase of the vaccine trials anytime. Phases II and III of the trials are being done in the USA and Thailand, and could last another three years before the vaccines are ready for use ("Country to get AIDS vaccine in seven years," by Carolyne Nakazibwe, The Monitor (Kampala) June 6, 2001).
