2001 JUN 27 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) --
by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - A Helicobacter pylori whole-cell (HWC) vaccine can induce immune responses in both H. pylori-infected and -uninfected people.
The HWC vaccine shows the most promise for prevention, rather than treatment, of H. pylori, which is present in half the world's population and causes peptic ulcer, atrophic gastritis, and gastric cancer.
"To explore immunization as a strategy for preventing and treating H. pylori-associated disease, we assessed the safety and immunogenicity in healthy adults of a formalin-inactivated, oral HWC vaccine, administered with or without mutant Escherichia coli heat-labile toxin (LT[R192G]) as a mucosal adjuvant," reported Karen L. Kotloff and colleagues at the University of Maryland.
In separate protocols, 23 subjects with or without H. pylori infection received varying doses of HWC (2.5 x 10(6), 2.5 x 10(8), or 2.5 x 10(10)) plus 25 (micro)g LT[R192G] and 18 subjects infected with H. pylori received one of the following combinations:
* 2.5 x 10(10) HWC plus 25 (micro)g of LT[R192G]
* 2.5 x 10(10) HWC plus placebo-adjuvant
