2001 JUN 27 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) --
by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - A member of the TCR VP family shows promise as a vaccine candidate for multiple sclerosis (MS), according to a new study in the Journal of Neuroscience Research.
Vaccination with a peptide of BV6S2/6S5, shown in earlier research to be overexpressed in MS patients, was able to stimulate a peptide-specific immune response in eight of 10 subjects with MS, said E.E. Morgan and colleagues at Immune Response Corp.
The researchers vaccinated patients with 300 (micro)g of BV6S2/6S5 peptide emulsified in incomplete Freund's adjuvant (IFA) then monitored them for 48 weeks in this multicenter, open-label trial.
Lymphocyte proliferation assays and delayed-type hypersensitivity skin test responses showed that eight of the 10 subjects developed peptide-specific cell-mediated immunity, Morgan and team reported.
The vaccine was well-tolerated and caused no serious adverse effects ("Vaccination with a CDR2 BV6S2/6S5 peptide in adjuvant induces peptide-specific T-cell responses in patients with multiple ...
