Crucell, N.V. (CRXL) has presented data demonstrating that its new system for vaccination, called AdVac(TM), stimulates a strong immune response, with improved safety.
Current gene delivery systems (vectors) are derived from human adenovirus serotype 5, a human common cold virus. These vectors need to be administered in high doses, because they poorly transduce the key target cells that elicit immune responses. Moreover, most people have been exposed to this type of adenovirus. As a result, current adeno-vaccines are very rapidly inactivated by the anti-adenovirus antibodies present in their bodies.
