"We report Mycobacterium bovis BCG infection in two children vaccinated with BCG (Tokyo strain) on the first day of life," said W.J. Su and colleagues.
The infections were diagnosed from biopsies of the children's skin lesions and anterior chest wall abscesses, the researchers said. A negative niacin test, the absence of nitrate reductase, and resistance to pyrazinamide and cycloserine implicated M. bovis BCG as the pathogen, and polymerase chain reaction tests confirmed the diagnoses.
