Despite the availability of an effective vaccine for nearly two decades, few adolescent and young adult men who have sex with men (MSM) are vaccinated against hepatitis B.
As a consequence, nearly one in five MSM becomes infected with the hepatitis B virus by age 22, according to a report in the June 2001 issue of the American Journal of Public Health.
Analyzing data from over 3,400 15-22 year-old MSM from 7 US cities, researchers with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discovered that only 9% of the men had been vaccinated against hepatitis B. The prevalence of HBV infection was found to increase from 2% among 15 year olds to 17% among 22 year olds.
