2001 JUN 20 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) --
Vical Inc. (VICL) reviewed the safety data from its recent Allovectin-7(R) and Leuvectin(TM) clinical trials, along with results suggesting research directions to enhance patient immune response, at the June 2001 meeting of the American Society of Gene Therapy (ASGT) in Seattle, Washington.
Vical scientists also presented preclinical data showing improved naked DNA protein-expression levels through the use of electroporation and poloxamers, and improved immune response to naked DNA vaccines through the application of foreign epitopes.
John Gutheil, MD, Vical, gave an overview of the safety profile of naked DNA cancer vaccines Allovectin-7 and Leuvectin from 15 completed Vical clinical studies enrolling more than 560 patients.
"While most currently approved therapeutics for the cancers under study cause severe side effects in the majority of treated patients," he said, "Vical's treatments produced severe reactions in only 1% of treated patients. We believe naked DNA gene therapy may provide efficacy comparable to conventional therapies, while offering significant advantages in safety and tolerability for the patient."
